  • Disaster capitalism is advocated by the likes of Jacob Rees-Mog and John Redwood
  • Disaster capitalists try to profit from the expense of others
  • Whole towns in America are addicted to opioids benefiting big pharmaceutical companies.

You may have heard of the book called The Sovereign Individual written by William Rees-Mog.  It depicts a future about limited resources, chaos, eg mass immigration and financial disasters. As the days tick past, they predictions are becoming more mainstream and possible, although some suggest they try to encourage this outcome so profits can be made.  George Monbiot has suggested recently that they may have gone too far, to the point that ecological disasters are happening all to often such as wild fires, floods, temperature fluctuations and a planet that is gradually getting too hot.  Disaster capitalists offer very few solutions and are happy to sit back and watch the picture unfold.

Many of these far right ideologues want a hard Brexit, mostly to make more profits and somehow go back to a 1950's utopia that never existed in the first place. They want to remove all our green regulations so they can plunder and pollute the planet for wedge. They own hedge funds and have large stakes in companies that will do very nicely out of a hard Brexit and so encourage it.

In America as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has recently pointed out, pharmaceutical companies are raking in large profits from drugs such as Fentanyl, most where old industry lies dominant or dead in large swaths of town across the US.  The drug is prescribed by Doctors willy nilly or similar drugs are available on the black market, but rest assured these useless drugs do very little to help the patient, only more likely to kill them. Opioids are now the second biggest killer in America, 72,000 people died last year as result of taking the drug, that is a 10% increase from the year before.

The rising overdose figures make the drug epidemic more deadly than gun violence, car crashes or Aids, which have never killed as many people in one single year. It represents over 200 people dying from overdoses every day in 2017.

Last year, the Trump admin declared a “public health emergency”, calling the epidemic “the worst drug crisis in U.S history”. But the declaration did not come with any extra funding or new initiatives to treat or prevent drug addiction.

Are drug companies ready to cash in on a hard brexit? damn right they are, they are probably hoping for a spike in mental illnesses and poverty putting more pressure on the already stretched NHS.  Drug dealers maybe rubbing their hands ready for a rise in substance abuse across the UK.

Crisis after crisis, insect loss, environmental damage, plastic, climate change, and antibiotic drug resistance could all fuel disaster capitalists, this time they may have gone too far.
