workplace drugTowns across America are addicted to opioids, will the same happen in Europe when automation kicks in?

  • PWC say 3% of jobs could disappear in the next 3 years and 30% in the next 15 years.
  • Automation could reduce the working week and hours worked.
  • No pay rise in years 10 years is a result of globalisation.
  • Companies recruited talent from overseas to save money in the aftermath of the 2008 crises.

Know body knows what the future holds but automation is a certain future and the future of work is set for a complete revolution. In a modern society with increasing amounts of vast technology at our finger tips, various kinds of software, A.I and robots are gradually deepening into our lives. The tech is replacing labour in industrial manufacturing, replacing military personnel, serving people, managing affairs in life and in medical care. The various industries such as biotechnology and transportation often rely on software, robots, and artificial intelligence to operate.

Many governments and schools are not preparing students for the onset of artificial intelligence and new polices urgently need to be looked at as jobs gradually become extinct. For example, taxi drivers and truck drivers are soon to be replaced by driverless vehicles and the 3% PWC predict could well be a much higher figure. Many SEO's at the latest Davos conference are aware of the impending A.I switch on and want to replace many of their staff as soon as possible to gain a competitive advantage.

Governments and new movements are looking at basic income which is one solution to top up peoples earnings or give enough cash to live a basic life. The experiment is being trialled in various countries around the world and it has been running in Alaska for many years where every citizen gets a dividend from the proceeds of the oil industry. Now we need a dividend from robots.

If people have increasing amounts of free time, what will people do with it? Some expects have looked at American towns where many industries have been decimated and the unemployment level is very high.  They have found often people turn to drugs and mostly opioids as they are readily available.. Governments are a little worried how to occupy people's free time if many of their populations are out of work, and what sense of purpose people may have as a result of losing their jobs. They may use a basic income to fund a drug habit or becoming dependant on alcohol.

What is needled now is a great amount of research into the long term effects of taking certain drugs and perhaps these drugs can be modified or new drugs created that don't produce any side effects or long term damage. A new alcohol is being developed headed by David Nutt that will stimulate the effects of the drug without damaging your cells or giving you the dreaded hangover.

Governments need to help create more community events and citizens could help transform cities into green utopian gardens, create more community leisure activities and encourage more community spirt. The last thing we need is for kids and adults to spend more time on computer games and lazing around watching TV.  Perhaps virtual reality will take off and transform peoples lives for the better as you could use the VR with physical activity. What we do know is that artificial intelligence is coming and there is still hope for a better world.
