Drug abuse is by far one of the biggest problems facing nations around the world, and much research is being done to examine various social and economic factors that trigger this abuse.

Drug abuse is also responsible for the rapid increase in AIDS cases as the disease spreads like an epidemic. It is believed that contaminated needles shared by intravenous drug users and unprotected sex among drug users are the main reason that this disease spreads so rapidly. Drug abuse must, therefore, be controlled, if not uprooted, to support a society that is healthy in every way. The UK recognizes the need for a more enlightened approach to this deadly abuse and is firmly committed to changing certain laws that indirectly encourage abuse. For example, laws that make the possession of needles a crime can indirectly encourage drug users to use the same needles, thereby posing a potential health risk.

It is estimated that there are over 440,000 problem drug users in the UK. There are more than 260,000 opioid users and also more than 180,000 crack users. Of these, perhaps 280,000 have a recognized crack cocaine addiction or heroin addiction. Each year around 2,000 people dies from drug-related deaths. The average heroin user starts with heroin around the age of 15, and about half of the drug users being treated have children - conservative estimates suggest that well over 300,000 children are directly affected by drug abuse by parents - with the potential for one genetic, developmental, physical psychological, social and environmental risks. However, it is recognized that parents who receive drug help - especially drug addiction - pose a lower risk to their children. Preventing drug addiction is critical to providing children with a normal, supportive, productive and safe environment.

Causes and risk factors for drug abuse in the UK

Developing a problem related to the abuse or dependence on prescription drugs can be influenced by several factors, including:

  • Genetics:

A genetic predisposition to impulsivity and seeking newness can increase the likelihood that a person is struggling with drug abuse. Studies involving twins and adopted children in the UK show that a biological parent who suffers from a drug disorder can also pose a risk for a later stage of drug abuse and addiction. People who inherit a predisposition to certain conditions that may be treated with prescription drugs are at an increased risk of being abused and dependent on these drugs.

  • Environment:

Pre-natal exposure to certain prescription drugs may increase the likelihood that a person will be abused or become dependent on these drugs. People who work with peers who purchase or use illicitly prescribed medications may also be at an increased risk of abuse of these substances. A car accident or other traumatic event, the symptoms of which are treated with prescription drugs, can also increase the risk that these individuals will be abusing or become dependent on them.

Risk factors:
  • Personal or family history of substance abuse
  • Personal or family history of a mental illness
  • Medicines are prescribed for legitimate purposes
  • Trauma and/or pain
  • Impulsivity
  • Novelty searching

Drug abuse tests

The following examples are most commonly used for the screening of drug abuse in the UK.

  • Urine:

Most laboratories in the UK use urine to test drug abuse. In the UK, urine is considered the gold standard in the industry because it is extremely reliable and easy to collect and analyze. Urine is also the simplest sample medium for cannabis detection - the most commonly used drug in the UK.

  • Saliva:

Mostly used where toilet facilities are not readily available, saliva testing is an unobtrusive method commonly used in the laboratory for screening drugs of abuse. With a narrower detection window that closely mimics blood levels, saliva is used to examine the current impairment.

Various drugs: Different types of drug abuse treatment in the UK

single rehabilitation program or treatment plan could not address the peculiarities and unique characteristics of each type of drug use or addiction. Customized program content is required for many factors. This includes:

  • The physical condition of the addict when he arrives at the rehabilitation center. Most of them are malnourished and have a low BMI that worsens against their recovery and concentration. A healthy diet plan should be part of the treatment program.
  • The psychological state of the addict on arrival. The addict may show various maladaptive behaviors requiring treatment, such as depression or obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Crack, heroin and cocaine

Of course, drug abuse treatment is very much dependent on the drug of choice, and much research is needed to find the right methods of treating certain addictions. For example, a UK program has proven to be very effective in treating cocaine, heroin and crack addiction and to help these people deal with their addictions, the unique fascination of these drugs and the undercurrent of addiction.

Alcohol Annihilators

Alcohol Annihilators is another locally developed program in the UK and very effective treatment for alcohol abuse. The program has been developed in collaboration with the recovery of alcoholics, and their contributions have resulted in a program that has been a great help in helping alcoholics cope with the effects of alcoholism, cravings for cycles, the addiction cycle and the addiction culture while providing invaluable spiritual perspectives.

Holistic treatment of drug abuse

Few drug rehab centers are likely to achieve a decent level of success with a fragmented and uncoordinated approach. A holistic approach has proven to be the most effective in the UK. This means that all available treatment options are brought together in one place and the most impact is achieved in three critical areas:

  • A standardized treatment plan is unrealistic and ineffective. Every single and every drug needs a tailor-made treatment plan.
  • Short-term, conventional and outpatient treatment does not work. UNODC research again proved in 2008 that 93 percent of these cases fall behind. The treatment should last at least six months.
  • Treatment should be in a hospital setting to fully control the addict's environment and improve their chances of a full recovery.
